You are entitled to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” that outlines the expected cost of your medical care.

According to federal law, health care providers must give an estimate of charges for medical services and items to patients who are uninsured or choosing not to use insurance.

  • You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate detailing the anticipated total cost for any non-urgent medical services or items. This includes associated expenses such as lab tests, medications, medical equipment, and facility fees.
  • Your health care provider should give you this estimate in writing at least one business day before your scheduled service or procedure. You can also request a Good Faith Estimate from any provider before making an appointment.
  • If your final bill is $400 or more above the amount listed in your Good Faith Estimate, you have the right to challenge the charges.
  • Be sure to keep a copy or photo of your Good Faith Estimate for your records.

To learn more about your rights to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 941-893-4900.
